AoW #2
Article of the Week:
One similarity between Of Beetles and Angles and Wildfire Breaks out Near Crowded Refugee Camp on Greek Island is that Mawi's family and the families of the refugees had to relocate because of war. This is indicated because in the article it states, "These children come from countries that are at war, where they have experienced extreme levels of violence and trauma," (5). This quote shows that, like Mawi's family, they had to flee their country because of war and take the trauma of the experience with them. In the book Mawi says that "He had fled our war-ravaged home a year earlier, driven out by the advancing Ethiopian army," (2). Mawi says that he, the father, Hailaeb, fled the war-ravaged home a year earlier, meaning that the home was not safe as war was raging around them.
The next paragraph will be about how war affects individuals and societies. War has many effects on people, for example in Wildfire Breaks out NearCrowded Refugee Camp it states that many more young migrants are attempting suicide and inflicting self harm. In the world right now we already have about 34,000 people commit suicide per year and now the refugees are doing it too, and not just the parents, the kids are doing it too. Next, you notice the conditions of the camp, in several points in the article it states that the refugee camp, named Moria, was unsanitary, unsafe, deteriorated, and outbreaks of disease are high. If you think about it, these people don't really have anywhere else to go, everyone has a high risk of getting hurt and they don't have a lot of food or water to live off of, but no one can really help them, there's always trouble when it comes to refugees weather you like it, or not.
